Tension that prevailed in Nagaland-Assam border following the report of kidnapping of two Assamese youth were calmed Thursday following intervention by Border peace coordination committee (BPCC), Assam-Nagaland.

According to Temsu Wathi Ao, Coordinator, BPCC (A-N), two Assamese youth Dilip Gogoi and Prasanta Gogoi, residents of Mautjuli Napam Gaon near Morongial under Nakachari Police Station in Jorhat were kidnapped from Assam-Nagaland border on Wednesday.

The kidnapped persons were employed in an illegal liquor brewery located at a jhum land inside Nagaland. It is reported that the public in the locality were not happy with such illegal activities and they had dismantled the brewery several times.

The kidnapping incident had fueled tension in the adjourning areas of Assam-Nagaland border. Several organisations from Assam side demanded the immediate release of the boys and had threatened to impose road blockade from Thursday evening.

BPCC (A-N) said that after “a meaning negotiation” the situation was eased and the two boys were released unharmed Thursday afternoon. The committee has termed the situation “unfortunate and unwarranted for”.

BPCC (A-N) thanked the administrations and police of both Assam and Nagaland and the village councils of the neighbouring Naga villages for their effective cooperation in defusing the crisis.
