Nagaland aims for 10% growth in tourist inflow: Yitachu

November 19, 2011 | by admin

Nagaland parliamentary secretary for tourism and law and justice Yitachu Friday said the state would “seek at least 10% growth in tourist arrivals to the state.”  Addressing the Second Inter State Regional Conference of the Tourism Ministers of Eastern and North Eastern States in Shillong, Yitachu said “We will similarly strive to ensure that the contribution from the tourism sector will provide for the largest employment in the state.”

Stating that tourism in Nagaland was at a nascent stage, Yitachu said people have now realized that tourism was not only for leisure but offered alternative means of livelihood. He said that Nagaland is committed to promoting exciting “green collar jobs” in the tourism sector. According to him, the North East may not be developed like the rest of the country but that can be the region’s unique selling point.

Yitachu also felt that the lifting of Protected Area Permit (PAP) this year from Nagaland “for a limited period” has been a positive step in the right direction. Yitachu also mentioned that “cross border tourism” has tremendous potential in the state as it shared a common border with Myanmar.

Yitachu also invited all to visit Nagaland during the forthcoming annual “Hornbill Festival” to be held from the 1st to the 7th of December. The Second Inter State Regional Conference of the Tourism Ministers of Eastern and North Eastern States in Shillong was attended by Union tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahai, ministers of tourism from North Eastern states and senior officials from the centre and states.
