Dimapur has highest record in road fatality

Dimapur has recorded the highest incidents of rash and negligent driving resulting in road accident fatalities.

As per official statistics, during the year 2011 some 41 persons died in road accidents in Dimapur, with two official registered cases and 17 non- First Information Report (FIR) cases which have been forwarded to the court for legal actions. Non-FIR is the case where the parties involved settle the matter between themselves without registering a case.

Road accidents in Dimapur have become almost a daily occurrence, keeping traffic police busy almost everyday. 
In order to control rash/speed driving in the city, Dimapur traffic police, Thursday, have started booking any drivers indulging in rash and negligent driving. It was learnt that 75 violators were fined till Thursday afternoon. Traffic Police said the number was expected to rise from late evening to past midnight.

Talking to Nagaland Post, officer in charge (OC) Traffic Dimapur, Kevisebeilie Angami said many of the victims or relatives involved in road accidents do not register cases against the accused as they feel the affected would not be able to get financial assistance if cases from the accused if cases were registered.

“We cannot force them to register a case”, said Angami while referring to less number of cases registered in road accidents. He also said that the police continue to investigate the cases especially in accidents relating to death.

Angami also disclosed that according to the order of SP Police Dimapur, police personnel were warned that double the amount would be imposed if police flouted the rules. It was observed that though the speed limit in Dimapur city is 20 kms per hour, yet all drivers ignore the speed limit.

Hit-and-run victim dies
One Mala (39) who was hit by a speeding car November 30 at Duncan Basti succumbed to injuries Thursday around 1 am in a private Hospital Dimapur.

On Wednesday night, the deceased (Mala) and her husband Sharat Mangang, who was also injured in the accident, were hit by a speeding Mitisubshi Lancer driven by one Monai, a mechanic, who fled to Assam side via Bor Lengri. The deceased was later cremated here at Dimapur.

According to sources, the owner of the car and victim’s families has amicably settled the case. One Mani Singh, representing the victim and Shitovi Swu, representing the vehicle and workshop owner signed the agreement.
As per the agreement, the victim’s side would not file any case in the court. 

Meanwhile, OC Traffic police Dimapur said that police would investigate the case and apprehended the accused (Monai) who is still absconding.
