NC, NWHD condemn MHA conditions

Naga Council (NC) and Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) Monday condemned the “act” of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in laying down “unacceptable” conditions against the visit of NSCN (I-M) leaders– chairman Isak Chishi Swu and general secretary Th. Muivah to Zunheboto. NC and NWHD also appealed to NSCN (I-M) not to take “hasty decisions” following the episode saying “cease-fire” in Nagaland should be given a chance so as to reach a solution acceptable to all.

A press statement jointly signed by members from the NC and NWHD stated that the MHA conditions “eventually forced” the two leaders and their entourage to “cancel” their proposed interaction with the people of Zuhneboto keeping in mind the “dignified position” of the Nagas and their “unique history”.

Both the Hohos alleged that “policy makers” in MHA and defence establishments have “repeatedly thwarted” the Naga people’s desire to bring normalcy to “our land” and successive Prime Ministers of India including PM Manmohan Singh’s “keenness” to solve the “Indo-Naga imbroglio” under “one pretext or the other”.

The joint press release said the conditions by MHA against the visit was “designed to humiliate” the NSCN (IM). While stating that the “near-normalcy” now was due to the efforts of FNR with the support of the Naga people, the two Hohos asserted that that the “deliberate and mischievous attempts” by outside agencies to prolong the “conflict-within and without” was a negation of Gandian philososphy as well as the “markings of a police state”.

The two civil society organizations have also appealed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the “entire” political leadership of India that “sincerity in approach” and “political will” was needed to solve the “political problem”.

The statement further added that Nagas deserve to live in peace like the rest of India and that the government should follow “diplomatic and just means” to solution rather than resort to “covert and dirty tactics” designed to prolong the conflict.
