Two villages strengthen age-old friendship

February 26, 2012 | by admin

Villagers of Mongsenyimti and Waromung Saturday strengthened their age-old friendship through erection of monoliths in each village; while the friendship monolith at Mongsenyimti village was unveiled by a Waromung citizen on January 13, a citizen from Mongsenyimti village unveiled the monolith on Saturday at Natosü hill at Waromung about 64 km away from Mokokchung town.

This age-old friendship, according to village elders, dates back to the head-hunting days of forefathers, when the situation was tense and there was conflict not only between villages but also between the tribes.

It was during such a time in the past that the two villages of Waromung and Mongsenyimti came to an understanding that should one village be defeated in a war with other communities, then the defeated village could reestablish their village in a hill allotted by the other village.

In this regard Waromung village reserved the Natosü Hill for that eventuality, and Mongsenyimti village also reserved the Aodangba Asükong for Waromung villagers to establish a village if they were ever defeated in a war with others.

Such was the friendship between the forefathers of the two villages, and though times have changed, the leaders of the two villages decided to renew this bond of friendship for posterity to come. And in this regard, a Mongsenyimti citizen, A Chuba Ozukum, Administrative Officer (Justice & Law Department) unveiled the monolith of friendship at the Natosu Hill, in the presence of hundreds of village leaders from the two villages.

A Chuba Ozukum while speaking at the programme, paid rich tributes to the forefathers of the two villages for the unique act of moulding friendship through allocation of land in their respective villages.

He also highly praised the Village Councils of Waromung and Mongsenyimti for strengthening the friendship between the two villages and asserted this good work of unveiling monoliths in the two villages would go a long way in strengthening the friendship of the two villages.

Village Council members of Mongsenyimti and also VC members of Waromung presented traditional songs at the programme. VC Chairman of Waromung, I Temen exhorted the audience while ex-VC Chairman of Mongsenyimti, Yanger Ozukum also spoke at the programme.
