New Wokha resolves to save bio-diversity

In an attempt to join hands with the global struggle against degeneration of bio-diversity and to protect the environment, natural resources and wildlife in and around new Wokha area, the new Wokha village during a general meeting came up with a list of resolutions which would come into effect from April 1.

The resolution stated that no person shall be allowed to collect flora and fauna in New Wokha area, with the exception that the concern collects the same from their own respective lands.

Violation of the resolution shall be subjected to a penalty of Rs. 250 to a person without vehicle, Rs. 300 to a person with vehicle; that no person shall be allowed to use chemicals of all kinds, battery, inverters and nets for fishing in the rivers, rivulet and fisheries in New Wokha area. violation of the same shall be subjected to a penalty of Rs 1000; that dumping of garbage and carcasses of livestock is strictly prohibited.

Offenders shall be penalized with a fine of Rs. 500; snares of any kind for trapping of animals and birds would be strictly prohibited throughout the year. Violation of the same shall be penalized with a fine of Rs. 500; that hunting of birds and animals with ballistic and non-ballistic weapons is strictly prohibited.

Offenders shall be penalized ‘with a fine of Rs. 500 and the weapons shall be confiscated by the village authority; that, “Nantsükhoro” the endangered spring cherry (Wild Himalavan Cherry, Prunus Cerasoides Family Rosaceae) a rare cherry specie found only in Mount Tiyi range in Wokha District and in sporadic parts of Rengma areas, is protected and preserved.

Cutting and destroying of the “Nantsükhoro” shall be an offence subjected to a penalty by the village authority. Further chairman of new Wokha village  stated that non-locals would not be allowed to settle and set up business in an around the village area without due permission of the village council.
