Naga Women’s Union (NWU), All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) have demanded immediate and unconditional release of NSCN (I-M) leader Anthony Ningkhan Shimray who has been imprisioned at Tihar Central Jail, New Delhi, on charges of “procuring arms and waging war against the India”.
The three orgaisations in a staement on Sunday appealed to all who stood for peace to condemn such “threats, arrests and arbitrary detention” and urge the Government of India to unconditionally release and all political prisoners.
The statement said that India had initiated peace negotiations with many groups in the Northeast and currently has formal cease-fire and suspension of operations with as many as 31 groups in the region but doubted the sincerity of the governement to resolve the issue of “political unrest” with the groups they were engaged with.
The three organisations also said that the continuing “fratracidal violence and killings, the splintering of groups and the formation of many new groups not only demonstrated how incapable were these processes.
The organisations said that they have been witnessing a “surge of arrests and detention” of key leaders who matter in the success of negotitaion and peace talks.
The statement said that Government of India could not deny that Shimray was one of the prominent leaders in the peace talk and jailing him showed “their insincerity and their complete disregard” for all the effort that has gone in to initiate peace talk with NSCN.
His arrest also strongly suggested that there was no honour in the numerous cease-fire agreements that the Governement of India has entered into, said the three orgaisation.
It added that Shimray “disappeared” after he landed at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International (Nepal) on September 27, 2010 and five days later India “admitted” to arresting him.
