Dimapur police clarifies on ‘exaggerated’ report

Reacting to news reports ‘IR girls draw unwelcome attention’ and ‘IRB lady cops bash up Naga guys’ published in two local dailies, Dimpaur police Monday termed the news item ‘exaggerated’ and issued a clarification to inform readers about the incident that “warranted such frantic attention of the media reporters”.

Narrating the sequence of events, Addl. Superintendent of police/PRO, Dimpaur in a statement said that eight Mahila IR personnel deployed at Marwaripati area were alerted when they saw a Naga man in an inebriated state assaulting another Naga.

The Mahila IR personnel intervened to prevent the two locals from fighting when “the aggressor started to abuse” them with foul and derogatory languages, pointed out the statement.

PRO informed that the aggressor resisted attempts made to apprehend him and it warranted the Mahila IR patrol party to use “force” to subdue him after which a mobile patrol vehicle was called to produce him at the police station.

According to PRO, the rescued assault victim’s recorded statement said that while he was at Durga Mandir area, the assailant came in a jeep in an inebriated state around 7.15 p.m. and started assaulting him “without any provocation” and punched him in the face and hit him on the back of his face.

The victim stated that the Mahila IR personnel “did not assault him” and instead rescued him from the attacker, said PRO.
The statement added that after arriving at the police station, both the victim and the attacker were forwarded to District hospital Dimapur for medical examination.

While appreciating the media houses for their efforts in highlighting crimes, PRO regretted that “hearsay and highly exaggerated reports” filled the pages to “sensationalize issues” which would only spoil the reputation of the print media whose ethics and values as “crusaders and harbinger of truth and unbiased reporting” would be questioned by readers if the trend continued. It appealed the print media to desist from publishing “unconfirmed news reports”.

Meanwhile, the PRO statement also added that police Monday raided a shop located at Marwaripati which was reportedly selling illegal IMFL under the guise of a shop and seized three cases of canned beer (Kingfisher), five cases of MC Rum, 11 bottles of Vino Red Wine, 14 half bottles of Old Monk and four cases of Kingfisher beer. The accused has been identified as J.P. Singh, s/o late A. Singh, Neori village, Bihar. He was taken into custody and a case has been registered in this connection, said PRO.
