State observes 1st Nagaland Police Day

 Adding another event to the state calendar, the Nagaland government has marked May 15 as ‘Nagaland Police Day’, nearly fifty years of statehood and forty eight years of establishment of the first battalion of Nagaland Police.

The day was celebrated at the Nagaland Armed Police Training Centre (NAPTC) stadium, police complex Chumukedima with governor of Nagaland, Nikhil Kumar as the chief guest, chief minister Neiphiu Rio as the guest of honour and home minister, Imkong L Imchen the host of the event.

The Governor, who was himself a retired Police Commissioner (Delhi), congratulated the Nagaland Police for its achievements and “excellent” performance in and outside the state.

He cited the achievements of the Special NAP posted to Delhi, 10 IRB in W. Bengal, 9 IRB in Chhattisgarh (deployed during the recent assembly election in Utter Pradesh), the Mahila battalion   entrusted for security duty during the Common Wealth Games and also archer-Olympian Chekrovolu Swuro who would be competing at the London Olympics 2012.

“The work Nagaland Police has been doing has been acknowledged not only in the sate but also outside as well,” he said.

Nikhil Kumar said the police force has a task to perform its duties with sincerity and dedication and reminded the personnel that the force was meant to serve the society and should be accepted by the people. “Police must do its best to be accepted by the people of Nagaland,” said the governor.

 Earlier delivering welcome and introduction speech,   O. ALem (IPS), state DGP, said that police came to existence in the Naga Hills since 1866 and in 1964 after Nagaland attained statehood, the 1st battalion of Nagaland Police was raised.

Alem said that present, Nagaland Police consists of 11 District Executive Force (DEFs), 15 battalions, Intelligence personnel, forensic science, PRH, PCW, PCS and an “attractive” Police Headquarters building.

While deliberating on the formation years and achievements, the DGP also acknowledged the contributions made by the officers, men and mahila some of who have retired but that their “good deeds” in providing “security, service and sacrifice” in the line of duty would remain history in the police archives.

Acknowledging the presence of state governor, chief minister and home minister, Alem said that it was an “historic” occasion as never it had happened in the organization that three heads of the state attend an occasion together.
Govt. will give special care to police: Rio

Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio who laid the foundation stone for the police archive building at the DIG (Trg. & border) office assured that the state government would give “special care” with emphasis for the services of both men and women of the force. .

“Together we will gift the state a law abiding citizen for peace to prevail so that we can peruse our developmental activities to be a citizen of the global village,” said Rio

Terming the day as “Red letter day” Rio while congratulating Nagaland Police led by DGP O. Alem for starting the “Nagaland Police Day’ said that the day was chosen to remember and recognize the services, sacrifices and duty rendered by police.

Rio than said that “people could not think” about Police Day or establish police archive even after 48 years of its establishment because of the prevalence of Naga political issue which caused “disturbance” in the state and “distracted” the minds.
“The political leaders, administrators and police officers were fully engaged in dealing the situation, the law and order problem therefore this did not cross our mind because we were too much engrossed and busy in day to day activities to pertain and maintain law and order,” said the chief minister.

Rio also said that going through the archive, the younger generation would understand how police have suffered, sacrificed and served the people.

Further, Rio said that he along with the home minister and other colleagues would see to it that the building would be completed with the shortest possible time.

After laying the foundation stone, chief minister also inaugurated the exhibition on the police force from its inception till date.

Later, chief guest for the afternoon programme, state home minister Imkong L Imchen presented certificates and awards in various discipline at NAPTC Stadium, Chumukedima.

An exhibition football match between DGP football A & B teams, archery and boxing exhibitions, band display, retreat and music marked the closing function of the 1st Nagaland Police Day celebration while an evening “barakhana” was also  organized for all officers and lady wives at Appu park, Chumukedima police complex.
