Civic bodies asked to stop levying taxes

State government has ordered that municipal and town councils not to levy any type of toll or taxes without prior sanction of the administrative department.

In an office memorandum, secretary to the state government Neihu C. Thur stated that all municipal and town councils should submit comprehensive proposals to the state government indicating item-wise toll or tax and the amount or rate of the tax to be imposed within their respective jurisdiction as per section 120 and 121 of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001, on or before July 20, 2012.

Municipal and town councils with the prior sanction of the administrative department of the state government, in order to raise revenue for its duties and performing its functions, levy various taxes within their jurisdiction as per Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001.
