Parliamentary study tour consisting of eight members including P. Longon, minister for soil & water conservation and land resources, Vikho-o Yhoshu, advisor, information technology & communication, Deo Nukhu, advisor, science & technology, Toshipokba, MLA, H.K. Khulu, APC, K. T. Sukhalu, commissioner & secretary, IT& C, N Benjamin Newmai, secretary, parliamentary affairs & agriculture and Daniel Krocha, program officer, IT & C, visited Elgin, Illinois and attended a workshop on good governance through use of Information Communication Technology. The seminar was organized by the Judson University in collaboration with the Government of Elgin City.
The programme was chaired by Jerry B. Cain, President of Judson University. Other officials of Elgin who attended the programme include F. John Steffen, Council Member of City Council, Chief of Police, Jeffrey A. Swoboda, Fahy, John P, Chief of Fire Services, Jeff Massey, Director of IT Services, Elgin
The team who visited Egin City Water Department was shown live demo on use of technology, treatment of water for public distribution.
The members were impressed by the demo where even back flushing of filters at various locations can be done remotely controlled through computer technology.
Public Works department demonstrated Snow Command where through use of GIS and weather forecast, the department is able to anticipate snow fall and the depth for clearance of roads and provision of public services during the winter months.
It was made known that use of technology have improved the services multifold even though human resources have reduced.
The group was also impressed with the extensive GIS based database of trees which had the database of all trees in Elgin City including height and liability of tree breaking which could be a hazard or obstruction to traffic.
The team visited Elgin Police Department and was given a demo of communication services including 911 calls and other emergency service calls.
The was shown a demo by the Fire and Emergency Services department on latest communication radios which are water, fire, immersion proof etc and which can communicate with any other radio of the police, military, and other agencies in USA during emergencies.
The team also got to meet the Mayor of Elgin City, David Kaptain who paid a courtesy visit to the team at the police department.
