‘Naga farmers responsive to new technology’

Scientist appeal to farmers to adopt hybrid maize cultivation
Director, NRC, Mithun, Jharnapani, Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa has described Naga farmers as responsive for their ability to adapt to any new technology when taught properly.

He recalled the maize programme launched by ICAR in collaboration with SBI, Peren during 2003-04 which proved to be a grand success.

He was addressing the farmers at the two-day training programme on New Technologies in Maize Production organized by Directorate of Maize Research New Delhi and KVK Dimapur, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre at KVK Dimapur on July 10 and 11 under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP).

Dr. Vinay Mahajan, Principal Scientist, Directorate of Maize Research New Delhi in his speech appealed to the farmers to adopt hybrid maize cultivation for better production as hybrids are tolerant to diseases and pests and also requested farmers to take up quality protein maize production for better animal feeds.

Folder on Cultivation of Maize (Zea mays L) written in English and Nagamese was also released on the occasion.
The training covered aspects on agronomical practices for maize cultivation, new hybrid, hybrid seed production, nutrient, disease and pest management in maize, baby corn cultivation, value addition and post harvest management in maize followed by field visit.

The resource persons were from KVK Dimapur, directorate of Maize Research, New Delhi scientist, ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre and SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema.

A total of 50 maize farmers from Mon, Zunheboto, Phek, Wokha and Dimapur disctircts attended the training. Two SMS from KVK Zunheboto and NEPED also participated along with other farmers. Maize seeds (Hybrid and composite) and farm implements (weeder and maize sheller) were also distributed to the beneficiaries.
