Sumi Hoho president passes away

The incumbent Sumi Hoho president H. Hesso passed away Monday morning after brief illness at his private resident at Upper Kenuozou colony, Kohima.

According to sources, late Hesso who was also holding the post of vice president, Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland (IRCN) and treasurer of Nagaland Senior Citizens Forum breathed his last at around 5.30 a.m. He was just short of completing his 79th birth anniversary.

Meanwhile, following the demise of its president late H. Hesso, the Sumi Hoho is organizing a funeral service on Friday at 9 a.m. at Sumi Baptist Church, Kohima (Daklane).

The hoho through a statement issued by its convenor organizing committee Kitoho Rotokha appealed to authorities of all the educational institutions in Sumi inhabited areas to close down their respective institutions in honour of the departed leader.

Born on September 25, 1933 at Kohima, Hesso passed his matriculation from Bengali H.S. Imphal and graduated from St. Edmund’s College Shillong. He was also president student Christian movement, Shillong between 1957 and 1959.

 Elected as chairman of Sumi Tribal Council in 1961-1962, he joined ‘Naga National Movement’ in November 1962.
Hesso represented ‘Federal Government of Nagaland’ in 1966-1971 as peace observer (Peace Mission). He became the director of Peace Centre at Tuensang 1971 and got elected as Kohima Town Committee Member 1974.

Hesso was also the founding member of Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland branch 1982 and elected to vice chairman of Red Cross in 2005 till date. He became the president of Nagaland Senior Citizens Forum in 2001 and served till January 2012 and adviser till date.

CM, Gov, others condole
CM: State chief minster Neiphiu Rio who is currently out of the country has expressed deep “pain” to hear the news of H. Hesso’s demise. Additional chief secretary Toshi Aier on behalf of the chief minister in a statement said Rio has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to all the members of the bereaved family and prayed that God will grant them courage and solace to tide over the loss.

Stating that Hesso had dedicated his entire life to the service of the public and his contributions would be remembered for years to come, the statement said that Hesso’s demise was a great loss to the people of the state in general and Sumis in particular.

Governor: State Governor Nikhil Kumar also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family of H. Hesso. Stating that Hesso was the founding member of Indian Red Cross Scoiety, Nagaland, the governor stated that in this hour of grief, he prayed that the Almighty grant solace to the departed soul.

CLP leader: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Tokheho Yepthomi said he was saddened to learn the demise of H. Hesso. On this sad occasion, the CLP leader recalled Hesso’s long and distinguished service for the people of Nagaland.

The passing away of Hesso has not only left a vacuum in Sumi tribe but also the Nagas, Tokheho on behlf of CLP offered sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

NSCN (I-M) leadership: NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu and general secretary Th. Muivah in a joint statement have also condoled the passing away of H. Hesso.

The two leaders said that they were encouraged by the examples set by Hesso when he was with them. They said that Hesso was very clear when it came to the issues of “our nation”.

It must be fittingly acknowledged that he never betrayed the Naga people and the Naga Nation, said Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah. The two leaders prayed and hoped that many would follow Hesso’s footsteps.
