Kerala club Kohima celebrates Onam

Kerala Club Kohima celebrated Onam, the biggest harvest festival of Kerala at Highland Park, Kohima on September 9.
Lighting of traditional festival lamp (Nilavilakku), laying of Pookkalam, cultural show, sports events like tug of war and musical chair, Onasadya (Onam feast) were the highlights of the programme.

Rajendranath, Adviser, Kerala Club unfurled the Club’s flag. C.J. Ponraj, Principal Secretary to the Government, V.K.Girija Vallabhan and R.Naresh, Accountant Generals of Nagaland extended Onam greetings.

President of Kerala Club, K. Issac delivered the welcome speech and vice president, K.Shaji delivered the vote of thanks.
Onam is celebrated during the first month of Malayalam Calendar – Chingam – falls in August – September months.

Onam festival is associated with the legend of King Mahabali, who ruled the land a long time ago, gave the people a golden era in Kerala. The King is so much attached to his Kingdom and it is believed that he comes annually to see his people living happily.

It is in honour, King Mahabali, Onam is celebrated. People of all religions, castes and communities celebrate the festival and also helps to create an atmosphere of peace and brotherhood. Onasadya (Onam Feast) is the most favourite and delicious part of the Onam festival.

Laying Pookkalam (Floral decoration), is a symbolic way to welcome the mythological King Mahabali, who is supposed to visit his subjects during the festival.

Kerala Club Kohima was established in the year 2005, as a social organization, comprising of Malayalees in Kohima, with the purpose of promoting and encouraging a sense of fellowship, unity, mutual respect, welfare and co-operation among its members as well as other organizations.
