Naga Council, Dimapur (NCD) and Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) Thursday have, in separate statements, condemned the rape of a minor girl in Duncan Basti, Dimapur and demanded that the accused be punished according to the provisions of rape laws.
NCD in a statement issued by its treasurer Dietho Rhakho urged upon the government to establish fast-track courts to tackle rape cases as a long term measure to ensure speedy justice to victims.
NCD asserted that the act committed by a “grandfatherly figure” has shocked every sensible person. Stating that such a heinous crime committed by “senior citizens on innocent children” was most condemnable, NCD demanded punishment to the accused as per the law and opened that he should not be granted bail.
NCD has also appealed to government agencies to treat crime against women with outmost seriousness. The council pointed out that gender related crimes were on the rise and unless tackled by responsible authorities, such crime may disturb “harmony” in a multi-tribal Naga society.
NWHD: Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has also condemned the rape of the minor girl. NWHD appealed to law enforcement authority not to grant bail to the accused under any circumstances but award befitting punishment according to the law.
While requesting all sections of the society to support and eliminate such crimes, NWHD president Hukheli T. Wotsa also lauded the police for arresting one Hambi Begum, who allegedly trafficked an innocent girl who was “sold” to a Delhi based Punjabi home as a domestic help.
NWHD added that the girl met a “good Hindu Samaritan” woman who booked a train ticket for her to return home. She safely reached Dimapur after more than a year away from home, said NWHD. It has also demanded befitting punishment to the human trafficker.
