JACWR to stage state-wide protest rally on October 1

Miffed with the recent Nagaland Assembly resolution on women’s quota and exemption of Part IX A of the Constitution, Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) Tuesday resolved to observe a ‘black day’ on October 1 by holding protest rallies across the state.

A closed door meeting convened by JACWR and attended by representatives from Naga Mothers Association, Eastern Nagaland Women Organization, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur, Tenyimi Women Organsation and Watsu Mongdang, decided that the rallies would be held in all eleven district headquarters/sub divisions on October 1 from 9 a.m. simultaneously.

According to a JACWR statement, at the end of the proposed rallies, a memorandum would be submitted to the Governor of Nagaland in Kohima and district authorities in other areas.

JACWR also stated all the women leaders who attended the closed meeting were unanimous in their stand that the Naga legislators had betrayed Naga women by denying women their constitutional rights of 33% reservation in municipalities.

Questioning the role of the sixty legislators and the select committee in subverting constitutional provisions under the guise of customary and social practice and misinterpreting Article 371 A, JACWR stated the state government sought the opinion of only men and ignored 50% of the population.

The meeting also resolved to proceed with the petition filed in the Supreme Court against the Division Bench High Court judgment and give full unstinting support to JACWR, said the statement.
