GPRN/NSCN Sunday issued a clarification with regard to the September 28 incident at Zunheboto wherein a 9 month old boy was accidentally killed.

Stating that “no amount of justification would bring the child back to life and knowing that no matter what one say or do could compensate the loss of an innocent child and bring back the cheer and smile” on the family members, GPRN/NSCN MIP however said certain were “elements trying to gain mileage” from the unfortunate incident and it had no other option but to clarify to let the people know what/how really happened.

The MIP stated that “on that unfortunate day at around 3.30 p.m., one of its cadres an upright and well disciplined officer in the rank of a ‘lieut’ Akato” went to the house of Ikaho and Akheli of Aghulito village, resident of Amiphoto Colony, Zunhebto. As a regular visitor to the house, MIP said Akato often holds the child and plays with him.

The MIP said “as usual after greeting the couple when he bend down to pick the child, his handgun which was tucked in his waistband fell down and since the gun was half-cocked, after hitting the floor went off on impact, hitting the child and also injuring the officer in the right palm and the bullet lodged in the chest”.

It also stated that the officer in question is now admitted in a hospital in Dimapur in critical condition with the doctors trying to take out the bullet from his chest.

MIP clarified stating: “who in his right mind would shoot a nine month old child and also shoot himself”, adding “Khaplang boys as usual were trying to gain cheap publicity by discrediting the GPRN/NSCN, instead of condoling and feeling sorry for the victims, they went on to the press with a ‘cock and bull story’ so that their gangs name appear in the paper everyday thereby trying to tell the people that they are also an organization who needs recognition”.

GPRN/NSCN further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed the family to “please forgive” and at the same time wished ‘lieut’ Akato, who is in a critical condition a speedy recovery.
