Extortion in Dimapur appears to have shot up especially in the light of the forthcoming festive month of December with armed miscreants demanding donations from an already harassed public.
Business community, as usual, are issued slips indicating the ‘tax amount’ to either of several groups, some of who are in existence only for extortions. In a recent case, some armed miscreants went to the residence of a well known non-local family on October 25 at around 6.30. As the husband was away, they handed over a BSNL mobile phone number to the wife, for the husband to contact them.
When no effort was made by the husband, the miscreants again went to the residence on November 13 and one of them fired two rounds, one of which hit a vehicle parked in the premises.
They miscreants again handed over another mobile phone number demanding that the husband (son of a well known non-local leader) contact them.
When the husband had no choice but ring up the number, he was asked to pay Rs.10 lakh within a period of three days.
Talking to this Reporter, the victimized and traumatised husband said the family was afraid of even informing the police since the miscreants would come to know of it and make things worse for them. The victim also said he practically lives off the modest rent he gets and that paying Rs.10 lakh was near impossible.
In another case, a local entrepreneur whose business was entirely seasonal, was also issued with a receipt slip for Rs.20, 000 purportedly issued by a faction in Dimapur solely for the purpose of extortion.
