Members of Aggrieved Medical Employees Union, Wokha (AMEUW) have been staging a peaceful protest at the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) here at Wokha since Monday.

The protesters, mostly comprising of medical attendants, lab assistants, sweepers, cooks, peons, malis, dressers, ayahs, helpers, etc., are staging a sit-in protest at the CMO office from 9:30 a.m. till 4 p.m. carrying placards that read: “Don’t let us Die of Hunger”, “Treat us like Human Beings”, “We want Justice”, “Release our Salaries”, etc.

The protest leaders informed Nagaland Post that since Monday they have boycotted the normal functioning of office and that their protest would go on indefinitely.

District administration and police are also present at the site to ensure that the protest passes off peacefully.

The protesters on Monday submitted a memorandum to the health and family welfare principal director demanding release of salaries and re-instatement of services for 70 odd medical employees under CMO Wokha who had been directed to desist from attending office with effect from May 2012 vide Letter No. DHFW-3/117/Gd-IV/General/2010 (pt) dated Kohima, on April 30, 2012 and whose salaries were held up from April 2012 till date as their services were under scrutiny by the vigilance and anti-corruption agency.

The AMEUW memorandum further cautioned that it would ‘gherao’ the CMO office establishment from January 7 to press for their demand followed by hunger strike.
