Power project to displace 4 lakh Nagas in Myanmar: NISC

April 1, 2013 | by admin

Naga International Support Center (NISC) has estimated that around four lakh Nagas in Myanmar would be displaced if the proposed construction of a dam for  hydro-electric project along the Chindwin River takes place.

In a statement, NISC said the proposed project would create a 14.000 square kilometers lake right in the middle of Naga inhabited areas in the Sagaing division of Myanmar.

The areas include the towns of Khamti, Homalin and 80 villages in the region. NISC also said a similar project in the Salween River would create a lake inundating the lands belonging to Shan people of Eastern Myanmar bordering North Thailand.

NISC has blamed both India and Myanmar the “inhumane tragedy” stating that India financed the project and would be getting 80% of the electricity generated by Tamanthi Dam while Myanmar government would reap the benefits of the remaining 20%.
