Consultant, VBD, NSACS on Wednesday said that out of 5, 37,867 persons screened so far 14,162 was tested HIV positive.
He said this while addressing a seminar on HIV and AIDS followed by a blood donation drive organized by Red Ribbon Club, NCTE-Kohima at Nagaland College of Teachers Education (NCTE), Kohima.
Alipoker while giving a power point presentation on HIV & AIDS and blood donation, also highlighted the basics of HIV & AIDS which included how HIV weakens the immune system, progression from HIV infection to stage of AIDS, modes of transmission of HIV and the major and minor signs classified by World Health Organisation.
During the presentation, he stated that though prevention was the only cure, HIV & AIDS was a manageable disease for which treatments were given free of cost.
He also said that people whose ailments were detected at an early stage were expected to live longer with proper and timely treatment.
Emphasizing on the importance of blood donation, Alipoker said that blood was a vital fluid of life without which one cannot live and that it cannot be made artificially. He also stated that blood can be stored for 35 days but in the case of Nagaland, it never lasts for 35 days as there were not enough donors.
He also explained to the gathering about the criteria for blood donation, steps taken for safe blood and the facts about blood donations. It may be mentioned that students and teachers of NCTE donated blood during the blood donation drive.
