Agricultural practices and operations in an area are dependent or determined by the prevailing weather conditions or climatic situations.
Ongoing Integrated Agro Advisory Service project of ICAR, Nagaland Centre Jharnapani, is engaged in various activities like forecasting of weather for the coming five days and based on that weather based agro advisory is issued for the farmers including Kisan Mobile Advisory Service (KMAS) for the farming community of the state.
Efforts are made by the staff of the project namely B. C. Deka, Nodal officer, Tasvina. R. Borah, Scientist i/c, Imtisenla Walling, Technical officer and K.N. Rengma to get feedback time to time from the target users on the services provided as well as to improvise for better correlation of the climatological parameters and practical agricultural scenario.
In this context, Expert – Farmer Interaction were organised at Bade, Kiyato, Tenyiphe I and Pherima A village under Dimapur district.
The session began with a brief background about the project by Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer.
She gave a brief highlight in general of KMAS, its usefulness to the farmers stressing on the importance of its service in todays’ context.
She also encouraged the farmers to utilize the service for improving agricultural production and betterment of their livelihood.
In the interactive session, farmers had queries like foot and mouth disease which has been prevalent for 2 to 3 years, skin disease on piglets, high rate of mortality in poultry during the winter season, hernia etc.
They were satisfied with the remedial measures suggested on the spot by subject expert Dr. Ebibeni, SMS, KVK Dimapur.
In the agricultural sector, pest problem is a major hindrance in crop production as was revealed by the queries of the local farmers.
The staple crop, paddy seems to be commonly attacked by the blast disease. Pest management solutions and organic remedial measures were suggested by the experts Tasvina. R. Borah, Scientist, Plant pathology and Hifzul Hoque, SRF.
As part of the activities undertaken in the project, the farmers can contact Imtisenla Walling, Technical Officer of the project for queries related to weather parameters and agricultural or allied sector activities.
