6 NE armed groups call I-Day boycott

August 11, 2013 | by admin

Six armed outfits from Northeast have decided to call a general strike and boycott the Independence Day.

The militant outfits as a mark of protest have decided to boycott the Independence Day. They have also called for the general strike on that day beginning from 1.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

These six outfits include ULFA (I) from Assam, Coordination Committee, Manipur (CorCom) comprising of six outfits in Manipur, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) from Meghalaya, Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) from Assam and Bengal, National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) from Assam and National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) from Tripura.

A joint statement issued by the outfits said that the Indian independence from British colonial rule in 1947 was a mere transfer of “colonial power” into the hands of Indian rulers who are connected to and work in collusion with the oppressive “feudal lords, princes, and global finance institutions.”

It added that “subjugated and oppressed people of the region cannot have fraternal relation with the exploitative colonialist.”

They alleged that majority of Indian working populations were “denied freedom, equality, peace, democracy and development.”

However, essential services, emergency measures, media and religious activities are exempted from the purview of the general strike, the statement added.
