Thenyizumi community carried out a mass social work on the State highway within the stretch of Sedzu to Chetheba along Kohima to Zunheboto road on August 31. Around 1000 villagers joined the social work and engaged in clearing drainage and filling up of potholes.

Thenyizu village VDB secretary Puthiyi Kezo said in the first place, the villagers were quite happy about the North East (SARDP-NE) project Phase I for construction of 2-lane road project Chakhabamato Zunheboto which touches Thenyizu village jurisdiction, as it would ensure better connectivity and communication.

He, however expressed unhappiness over the execution of the work by M/s Maytas-Gayatri JV and lamented that the work was carried out in haphazard manner and non speedy execution of the work has deteriorated the existing road condition instead of the building the road.

The road is now in deplorable condition and commuters face immense hardship, he said adding that it has invited soil erosion and landslides while culvert and drainage system has been disrupted.

Kezo also informed that on several occasion, vehicles get stranded on the road side for two to three days due to frequent blockade of the road and the worst effected were the patients.

Further, several terrace fields have been affected, he said adding it has threatened the livelihood of many farmers who solely depend their daily bread though cultivation.

Chukhuphuyi Kezo, acting chairman of Thenyizumi Village Council and head GB village said the manner in which the M/s Maytas-Gayatri JV has been executing the work, showed that they were not working for the benefit of the general public but are “only after bill”.

For this, he suggested working out some mechanism for speedy execution of the work. Meanwhile, residents of GA project colony Wokha and DEF Wokha, on Saturday, undertook a selfless, noble and commendable job in repairing the river-bed-like stretch of road from Wokha Town Baptist Church to SP Office.

According to Khyopenthung Tsopoe, Blue Hill Colony Wokha, this particular stretch of road is normally left unattended throughout the year and with the onset of monsoon it literally turns into a river.

“One can imagine the woes of the pedestrians as even vehicles face great difficulty in wriggling out of this river”, added the press releases and also highlighted that this road is the only road connecting the entire Nyiro Range with Wokha Town.

“Every year the residents of GA project colony and DEF, and occasionally the Assam Rifles, repair the road at their own expense”, said the press release.
