Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department was asked to create more awareness on use and importance of use of iodine and was encouraged to observe ‘Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day’ in district levels so as to impart and educate the rural people.
This view was put forward by principal director H&FW Dr. Neiphi Kire in his address during global Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) prevention day which was observed Monday at the conference hall, directorate of health and family welfare Kohima and organized by the department of health and family welfare government of Nagaland.
Dr. Neiphi in his address said that the department would conduct survey of iodine to sensitize and strengthen the sale purchase and proper use of iodine salt for human consumption.
He also said that the department plays a great role giving more awareness regarding use and it important of iodine.
He also highlighted that health camp to be oragnised in all the districts to reach out in health benefit of the rural people and said that the final programme and time will be finalised within few days.
Dr. Neiphi Kire said that iodine deficiency disorder was a global public health problem including the Nagaland State.
He said that iodine deficiency disorder are caused by lack of iodine in diet and can range from goitre mental retardation, physical sub-normalities neuromotor defects etc. and that majority of these disorder are permanent and incurable. He however added that each one of these diseases was completely preventable.
Senior Specialist NHAK Dr. Wathsutho Nyuthe presented the scientific role of iodine in human body and its deficiency disorder.
Joint director & programme officer NIDDCP (H&FW) Dr. I. Sungit while presenting the keynote address said that the objectives of the department was to survey to assess the magnitude of the iodine deficiency disorder, supply of iodated salt in place of common salt, to resurveys to assess the extent of iodine deficiency disorders and the impact of supply of iodated salt after every five years.
Dr. I Sungit also said that iodine deficiency disorder are incurable but it could be prevented easily by regular consumption of iodised salt and suggested to keep the salt in cool place away from sun, fire with proper lid and advised not to store salt more than 5-6 months. He also advised to add salt only at the final stage while cooking.
The programme was chaired by mission director NHRM, H&FW Dr. Khanlo Magh and vote of thanks was delivered by Additional Director H&FW, Dr. Sukhato A. Sema.
MOKOKCHUNG: ‘Global iodine deficiency disorder day’ was observed at IDSP Hall, Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) Mokokchung.
GNM students of school of nursing and the health officials attended the programme. Resource person, Dr. Kibang deputy CMO & district nodal officer, NIDDCP Mokokchung highlighted the gathering on iodine deficiency and diseases.
He urged the nursing students to be torch bearers on awareness of the use of iodised salt. Demonstration of iodine content in salt by using salt testing kit was demonstrated by Merenlemba, food safety officer, CMO office Mokokchung. This was followed by group discussion with good response from the students. The programme was chaired by Tongpangkokla PHN & tutor school of nursing IMDH, Mokokchung.
Peren: Along with the rest of the world, Peren district observed “Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day” October 21 at the CMO’s hall with medical superintendent, district hospital, Peren, Dr. N. Meren, as the resource person.
Resource person, Dr. N. Meren, in his power point presentation, while talking about the importance of Iodine illustrated about what was Iodine, its daily requirement in human body for normal development of the body and brain and added on the amount of Iodine required in the different stages of livelihood, sources of Iodine, endemic areas in India, consequences of iodine deficiency disorder, magnitude of the disorders, IDD scenario in the country and further elaborated on the government’s policy and iodine deficiency disorder in Nagaland.
Deputy CMO, Dr. Tiala Longkumer, while speaking about the significance of the day, said that the day was observed to make people aware of the danger of lack of iodine deficiency disorder and that iodine deficiency disorder was a serious condition especially for children, pregnant mothers and among poor people and thus to prevent it, it was important to educate the people to include iodine content diet and that poor should be educated on iodine deficiency disorder.
The programme was attended by NGOs and different departments of the district. Dr. Yankho Lotha, while initiating the programme pronounced the welcome speech where he extended gratitude to the resource person and all the participants for their presence. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Limatula DPO (NVBDCP).
