Much anticipated two-day “Morung Fest” organized under the aegis of Ao Students’ Union Diphupar (ASUD) on the theme “Vibrance of the Nagas” and under the patronage of road and bridges minister Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, as the chief host and MLA and chairman, Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) Jacob Zhimomi as co-host began Monday at Agri Expo Site, Diphupar.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Azo said that Diphupar village being the second biggest village in Asia was the right village to invite Nagas to a common platform for creating oneness.
He said that in other villages, one could see only a certain tribe or community but Diphupar village comprised of more than twenty Naga tribes living together in unity. The chief host also said that in order to rise above tribalism and to bring unity, the fest was being initiated.
He further assured the gathering that he would take up the issue of sponsoring the winner of the Morung indigenous food contest in opening up a restaurant so as to promote entrepreneurship.
The inaugural programme which was chaired by M. Limasunup Imchen, started with an invocation by pastor, Ao Baptist Church Diphupar, welcome address was delivered by Ao Students’ Union Diphupar president, Mongden Jamir, chairman, Diphupar Village Council, while a war dance was presented by Loyilo Cultural Club, Old Showuba.
Later, minister for youth resources and sports, Merentoshi R. Jamir, declared the Morung volleyball tournament open.
Speaking on the occassion, Merentoshi lauded the efforts of ASUD. He said such Fest spoke volumes about the Naga unity.
Also inaugurating the Morung indigenous food contest, MLA and vice-chairman, NSAMB, S. Chuba Longkumer, said that food was not only a basic requirement but was a part of the Naga culture as it identifies a person or a tribe.
Dubbed as a “Mini Hornbill Festival,” the culminating day would witness Morung literary contest to be declared open by parliamentary secretary, jail, homeguards, DB/GB Kejong Chang and the grand finale with in the presence of co-host, MLA Jacob Zhimomi.
