Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of Rangapahar, S. Hukavi Zhimomi Colony and Sangtamtilla Village have strongly condemned the indefinite economic blockade imposed along national highways 29 and 36 by Karbi Students and Youth Council (KSYC), All Dimasa Students’ Union (ADSU), All Assam Gurkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Karbi Unemployed Youth Association (KUYA) in Diphu.
In a joint press release, Rangapahar Village chairman Sunil, Santamtilla Village GB Sekishen Sangtam and S. Hukavi Zhimomi Colony GB Hotoi Y. Awomi urged these organizations to understand the word “disputed land” and asked them to refrain from any action since the matter was pending in the high court and the question of calling the land as “Karbi land” did not arise till the court verdict. JAC also warned AAGSU not to interfere “without any locus standi” and asked the union to tender an apology to the Nagas at the earliest.
JAC also alleged that the Karbis were known as “Mekeries” and were “nomadic people and asserted that they had no right to claim the land. The committee also supported Rengm a Naga People’s Council (RNPC)’s contention that there were no Karbi lands in Assam except Hamren sub-division, a point which has been pointed out by Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
JAC also claimed that Karbis took advantage of the “disputed land” in the last 40 decades and were destroying the “disputed dense forest and had established many villages by bringing people from Bangladesh, Meghalaya, Tripura and other neighbouring state. The committee also alleged that the Karbis not only “organized multiple under grounds” creating fear but also staged frequent bandhs which affected the economy of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and India at large.
JAC appealed Assam government and Nagaland government and the Centre to restrain these groups who had called the indefinite blockade and warned that the committee would be compelled to “flush out” these groups from Nagaland and in neighbouring areas as well.
KAPF appeals
Karbi Anglong Peace Forum (KAPF) Wednesday expressed regret that a border issue has cropped up between Nagaland and Assam along Karbi Anglong-Dimapur inter-state border area. In a statement, KAPF chairman Benting Teron and vice chairman Pankaj Teron said during a meeting held Wednesday, the forum also
expressed the belief that both the states should respect their “territorial integrity and that the issue must be solved amicably between the both the governments.”
KAPF said both the governments should take the steps to resolve the problem instead of civil bodies from both sides.
In the interest of peace and harmony, KAPF appealed to all public and organizations to refrain from imposing bandhs or blockades. The peace forum said it was against any action that deprived the human rights of any person or people. Any misunderstanding or disputes should be addressed through dialogues and mutual respect, said KAPF.
HYDF slams Assam govt., KAAC
DIMAPUR, FEB 26 (NPN): Hill Youth Democratic Front (KYDF) has hit out at the Assam government and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for allowing Karbi Anglong to be “left to the mercy of encroachers.”
In a press release, HYDF assistant general secretary & publicity in-charge, Hingchong Teron said various Karbi Anglong based civil organizations were compelled to launch the economic blockade against Nagaland, which it said could have been avoided if Assam government and KAAC had acted on the issue.
Asserting that the Assam government had “never cared for the protection of Karbi Anglong boundaries, HYDF said it was responsibility of the state government to secure the inter-state border, since ‘law and order’ and ‘police’ was a state subject.
“Karbi Anglong whose land is encroached upon by people from Nagaland, is yet another proof that Assam cannot protect Karbi Anglong,” HYDF stated.
Further, HYDF said both Nagaland and Assam government were responsible for “abetting encroachments” and that the KAAC was also “unassertive and incompetent”.
HYDF has demanded Assam government to ensure protection of Karbi Anglong boundary or “relinquish the claim over Karbi Anglong” if the same could not be done.
It has been understood that the Assam government “is not at all interested to protect the Karbi Anglong boundary, which is demanding separation from Assam”, HYDF added.
AAGSU has no hand in blockade: NGA
DIMAPUR, FEB 26 (NPN): With regard to the economic blockade imposed on Nagaland by various Karbi based organisations, Nagaland Gorkha Association (NGA) has clarified that the All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) was not a party to the blockade.
Clarifying this, NGA president Nobin Pradhan in a press release said that the association on February 25 took up the matter with the executive members of AAGSU wherein it was made clear that it was only the Karbi Anglong unit of Gorkha Students Union involved, owing to local sentiments of the Karbis.
Expressing regret that the people of Nagaland might have a wrong impression of AAGSU, NGA hoped that the people of both the sides would solve their differences in an amicable way without causing inconvenience to the public.
