Over 550 pet bottles (100 ML) of banned cough syrup (Codeine) were seized from an Imphal bound rice laden truck (CG-04JA5728) by police personnel manning the Chumukedima check gate during wee hours early Sunday.
Police said the banned cough syrup bottles were found in the truck driven by one Sarabjeet Singh (38), son of Surjeet Singh of Gajnipur, Punjab and a resident of Thangal Bazar, Imphal, Manipur.
As per the driver’s statement, the truck belonged to one Metha, who was a resident of Dimapur. He could not give more details of the truck owner.
Sarabjeet told the police that he has been driving the same vehicle for a long time back and that he was not aware how the banned cough syrup bottles were loaded on the truck which was already packed with rice bags bound for Imphal from FCI godown, Dimapur. Police said according to the driver’s version, he was asked by the owner of the truck to drive the vehicle to its destination.
The accused has been kept at Diphupar police station and a case has been registered under Drugs and Cosmetic Act and further interrogation was on.
