Life Consumer Society & RTI, (LCS & RTI) has sought detail clarification from Marketing & Consumers’ Federation Ltd. (MARCOFED) on the failure of Village Grain Bank (VGB), a Centrally sponsored scheme.
In a press release, LCS & RTI general secretary Khevito Chishi and Vitoho Yeptho while seeking intervention and clarification said that MARCOFED was the implementing agency of the VGB scheme for the period 2006-07, 2009-10 and 2012-13 for distribution of food grains free of cost.
After receiving some information and documents through filing of RTI, LCS & RTI informed that VGB scheme was launched for “chronically food scarce areas” like draught/natural calamity prone areas and far flung inaccessible hilly regions where access to food remained a problem.
The main objective of the scheme was to provide safeguard against starvation during period of natural calamity when the marginalized food insecure household could not have sufficient resources to purchase ration, pointed out LCS & RTI.
The society said that such marginalized people in need of food could borrow food grains from VGB set up for the same purpose and the scheme was also proposed to include eligible families living below poverty line.
