A day long farmer’s training on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) of rice cultivation was held on June 25 at SDAO office compound, Jalukie, which was chaired by SDAO, Jalukie, R. Santsu Kithan.
Kithan in his address highlighted the implementation of National Food Security Mission (NFSM-Rice) under the division and the need for SRI cultivation. He also emphasized that more than 40 percent of the world population depends on rice as the major source of calories and for Nagas “rice is life” while also informing the farmers that in order to achieve food security, the farmers should adopt SRI method as SRI itself was a set of practices that help to get higher productivity per unit area with good use of these practices was found possible to increase the rice yields by 50% to 100% in other countries.
Many topics including SRI methods of rice cultivation, weed management under SRI, advantages of transplanting young seedlings in line in terms of production per unit area, weed management by cono-weeder under SRI system and many other important topics were thoroughly deliberated by well experienced field officers working under SDAO, Jalukie. Altogether, 84 farmers from 12 villages attended the training.
