Beckham’s support for Argentina may not be quite the act of rapprochement that it was billed

David Beckham’s decision to kit out his family in Argentina shirts for the World Cup final might not be quite the generous act of rapprochement that it was billed. Canny Becks has a lucrative contract – surprise, surprise – with the Argies’ shirtmakers, Adidas. The firm gave him a lifetime deal worth £90million.
David Beckham and his three boys were at the Maracana to take in the World Cup final on Sunday night – and there was no doubting which side they were supporting.
Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz were all kitted out in Argentina shirts as they took on Germany for the greatest prize in world football. Beckham himself went for what could have been a subtle nod to the Argentinian team colour in a denim shirt.
Their choice of attire may not have gone down too well with Brazilian heroes Pele and Kaka, with whom Beckham posed for photographs prior to kick-off.
For his part, Rio Ferdinand in the commentators’ box was horrified the boys were wearing Argentina shirts.
‘I can’t believe Beckham has let them wear Argentinian shirts,’ he complained at half time. ‘My boys would never be allowed to do that. They’d be in England kit all the way.’
