Excise department on October 9 constituted the ‘District Prohibition Committee’ in all the districts to ensure strict enforcement of NLTP Act.
Excise Commissioner (EC) Maongwati Aier Friday disclosed this during the destruction programme of seized liquor and drugs at the directorate of excise and prohibition, Dimapur.
Altogether, 1351 cases of assorted IMFL, 120 kgs of ganja, 105 grams of brown sugar, 15,490 spasmo proxyvon capsules and 300 tablets of Nitrosun seized by excise mobile squad, Dimapur were destroyed in the presence of liquor and drugs destruction board.
According to Aier, the committee was formed on October 9 with districts’ Deputy Commissioners as the chairman and Superintendents of excise as member secretary.
The committee has been entrusted, to mobilize public opinion and to provide counselling and help to liquor addicts, Aier said.
Apart from this, he said that the committee would carry out a survey of liquor addicts and help them get over the destructive habit while also keeping strict vigil on the movement of illicit liquor traffickers in the state.
He further informed that the department had seized 63 trade licences of hotels, lounges and pubs in Dimapur for selling liquor. The district and sessions judge has been endorsed to cancel the trade licences, Aier added.
He further appealed the competent authority (administration and municipal council) to cancel the seized trade licenses for indulging in illegal activities.
He said by doing so, the business community would refrain from carrying out illegal business by way of selling liquor in hotels, shops and lounges etc. in all other districts.
Not denying the fact that there were many liquor distilleries along the Assam-Nagaland border, Aier said he had discussed the issue with his Assam counterpart. He Excise commissioner, Assam had assured to take all measures to prevent illegal flow of liquor from across the border. DC Karbi Anglong had also been informed on the issue and to take necessary steps, Aier added.
Earlier, ADC Dimapur Elizabeth Ngullie lauded the Excise department for the commendable job and tireless efforts for executing their duties effectively.
Meanwhile, Excise superintendent, Ghokiho Yeptho said the seized items that were destroyed Friday were recovered by Excise mobile squad during the period March 2013 to September 2014. During the period, 735 persons were arrested, he added.
