Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has reminded the public and business establishment within its jurisdiction of KMC that plastic (waste management and handling) rules 2011 as notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) under the Environment (protection) Act 1986 were enforced in the capital city. It state that the thickness of plastic carry bags made of virgin or recyclable or compostable plastic should not be less than 40 microns in thickness.
KMC Administrator, Kovi Meyase, informed that KMC would continue to check and if any shops found selling/ using polythene plastic bags below 40 micros, adding defaulters would be penalized.
It said Rs 2500 to Rs 5000 would be imposed for first offence, and for second offence trade license would be cancelled as per provisions of the labor act. It further informed that any stockiest/ firms might apply for import permit to bring the products of virgin plastic of 40 microns after approval from KMC.
