IWAI undertakes hydrographic survey of river Tizu

A joint team of officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), state Planning & Co-ordination department, Precision Survey consultancy from Kolkata and local guides undertook a hydrographic survey from Longmatra (0 KM) to Avangkhu (Burma border 35 Km) in view of the proposed inland waterway in the area.
Centre has identified 13 inland waterways from the North East to be declared national waterways including Nagaland’s Tizu river.
The team comprising of 20 people with local guides from Longmatra and Laluri village carried out the survey in rubber boat with latest hydrographic instruments from March 29 till April 1, from Longmatra to Avangkhu village along Burma international boundary. 
In a press release, OSD Planning & Co-ordination department, Thomas Thailu said that the survey the team took ground and water level at different locations using Real Time kinematic system (R.T.K) velocity of current. 
As per the observation, the team stated that the river had maximum depth of 5.00 m and minimum depth of 0.50 m, with meandering through the rocky hills on both sides. 
The team also encountered about 70 rapids of various categories which needed to be cleared for navigation purpose for 7 to 8 months in a year. 
The team also identified few locations to set up terminals mainly at Longmatra village, Laluri Tizu bridge and downhill of Avangkhu village, which it felt could be developed for IWT. 
After the team returned Kohima, on April 2 with samples– water and bed-soil sample– for testing, they also briefed the outcome of the tour and the possibilities to developed the river to parliamentary secretary Planning & Co-Ordination, Evaluation & Monitoring, Neiba Kronu, K.G. Kenye, advisor (political) to CM where Dr. Vesapra Tinyi, project co-ordinator Planning & Co-Ordination department were also present.
The survey team had proposed that the river could be developed in phase manner first taking the stretch till Laluri Tizu bridge and later from Laluri bridge to Avangkhu village. 
The team comprised of K.D. Thongon, supervisor, IWAI under ministry of Shipping, GoI; Thomas Thailu, OSD Planning and Co-ordination, New Delhi, Feroz Khan team leader of Precision Survey Consultancy, local guides Paul Mutrong and Peter Tsolenmong of Longmatra village, Athanglow Jangri of Laluri village and Wetsiilo Venuh of Chizami village.
