Dead body of a non local male was recovered from a small stream, below Phuktong village, about 2-3 kms away from the state highway Tuesday by Mon Police.
The deceased, identified as Arpon Das (26), son of late Nirajan Das, resident of Sonari under Sivasagar district Assam, bore bullet wound above the right ear, was suspected to have shot at close range with pistol.
According to the friend of the deceased and witness Lohit Konwar, who was rescued by the police at Tuimei village Tuesday morning, two men hired the vehicle (Indigo CH with Regd. No. ASO4-M-6626) from Sonari at around 2:30 p.m. on April 20 on the pretext of bringing a patient from Mon for treatment.
On reaching Zakho village junction, witness said one more person, reportedly a friend of the duo, joined and continued their journey to Mon.
However, after crossing Tuimei village nearing Phuktong village, the passengers stopped the vehicle at gun point and took the duo to the jungle and shot the driver.
Lohit Konwar claimed that the gunmen attempted to kill him first but he managed to escape by rolling down the slope. He also sustained bullet wound on his arm while fighting back.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at around 4-5 p.m.
Lohit after escaping tried to contact the owner of the vehicle but could not due to poor signal in that area.
It was only after travelling back to Tuimei village he managed to inform the vehicle owner, who informed the police Tuesday at around 8 a.m.
The body of the deceased was brought to Mon District Hospital for post mortem. After completing necessary formalities and registering a case under relevant section, the body was handed over to the relatives. The district administration accompanied the dead body to the border.
Meanwhile, the Mon District Driver Union in an act of solidarity donated a Konyak shawl to cover the body.
