Commissioner of police Dmu clarifies on June 18 incident

June 21, 2015 | by admin

Reacting to the news report of alleged assault by police personnel during a raid on June18, published in section of the local daily, office of the Commissioner of Police Dimapur has issued a clarification in this regard.
In a press note, Addl. DCP & PRO Dimapur Police clarified that the reports were “exaggerated, presenting only one side of the story”.
PRO said that on June 18 night, concerned citizens informed that a truck parked within the Model village area, 5th Mile was being loaded with liquor.
Accordingly, police two mobile patrol units were dispatched to verify the matter. The patrol units found that the truck was being loaded into with cases of liquor by a group of men, PRO said.
On seeing the police, few of them tried to escape under the cover of darkness but were chased and caught by the cordon team.
Amongst those detained, PRO said, was one Samuel Sumi, a government teacher residing near the premises. He tried to escape again while being detained but was caught, PRO said.
“It was only when the party was about to move out from the location with seized consignments and detained persons that, he announced that the premise belonged to his uncle and protested being taken to the police station”, PRO said.
However, police said that the allegations of police personnel under the influence of alcohol and assault upon a child and a woman were fabricated and completely false.
The entire exercise was done within half an hour and the allegations that people were detained on the spot for hours is unfounded, PRO said.
Seven persons were taken into custody for further enquiry after being found near the truck, of which five were released provisionally including Samuel Sumi, PRO said, adding two were officially arrested.
Not denying that the police in the melee caused physical injury to Samuel Sumi, PRO said the excesses were regretted. “Circumstances and resultant actions undertaken by the police personnel is being enquired into and responsibilities will be fixed”, it added.
While appreciating the role of media in bringing out issues into public domain, police however appealed to all that for such matters having ramifications upon the image of a department, confirmation and clarifications be sought before being published so that equal opportunity is provided to highlight the other side of the story.
PRO further said 45 cases of IMFL was found in the truck (NL05G-0388) and that investigation was still under progress to arrests more persons
