
Joining the rest of the world in a campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits, different programmes were organized across Nagaland, Thursday to mark the day.
In Kohima, Nagaland Public health Engineering Department (PHED) organized Global HandWashing Day at Don Bosco School Sechü- Zubza, some 15km away from the state capital. SDO (PHED) Kohima rural division Er. Mezivil Kikhi in his key note address said as per the UNICEF record, 2000 children in India die every day due to diarrheal and pneumonia alone. He said out of this, 1600 children die because of diarrheal alone which is directly related to unsanitary conditions. Er. Mezivil said the staggering deaths figure occurring everyday are easily preventable if one have good sanitary habits like washing their hands with soap. Er. Mezivil also said sanitation is not only a health issue but an environmental issue at large and encouraged the students to create awareness about it. He reminded that hand washing is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diseases that claim millions lives of the children in developing countries. Sanitation and hygiene consultant DWSM PHED Thepfulie Theünuo while speaking on the theme “clean hands, healthy you” deliberated on the diseases caused by unhealthy habits and deaths due to diarrheal and pneumonia. Theünuo also urged the gathering to follow the simple rule of hand washing with soap before eating, after using toilet or doing manual work and also to propagate the habit of washing hands with soaps to the community. The programme was chaired SDO Tseminyu division Er. Neirelie, invocation by Christian Mission School principal Rüüngutuo Sechü, special song was presented by DBS Sechü-Zubza, demonstration on handwashing by IEC consultant DWSM PHED Rececca Kikon and vote of thanks by Er. Ruokuovituo Vizo SDO Kohima rural division. Around 700 students from Christian Mission School Zubza, Government High School Sechü-Zubza, Don Bosco School Sechü-Zubza and others attended the programme. (Correspondent)
NOKLAK/ TUENSANG: Global HandWashing Day was observed at Noklak town organized by district Water and Sanitation Mission PHED and sponsored by Water Sanitation and Support Organization, PHED Nagaland with additional deputy commissioner Noklak, K. Mhathung Tsanglao as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest stressed on the importance of “raise a hand for hygiene” and stated that hand washing is one of the basic steps to prevent from diseases. He emphasized the four basic steps to wash hand with soap before and after eat, touch, sneeze, cough or blow nose and whenever our hand is dirty. Tsanglao also encouraged the students to practice good sanitary habits stating that children are the agent of change in future society. Khiamniungan Tribal Council, general secretary Puchai PM also exhorted the students, saying water and sanitation is one of the most important steps which leads to development and urged the students to join hand and work for better health and better Noklak. Rongsentola Sanitation & Hygiene Consultant DWSM, PHED, Tuensang demonstrated hand washing and its importance for health.The programme was chaired by IEC Consultant DWSM PHED Tuensang Ashale Seb who also delivered welcome address and key note address. Floric Band presented a special number while vote of thank was delivered by SDO Noklak PHED Tuensang Er. Narisen Jami. DIMAPUR: In Dimapur, hundreds of students of MGM Higher Secondary School Dimapur observed the day under the theme, “raise a hand for hygiene” organised by department of Public Health Engineer Department (PHED) (Rural) division Dimapur and sponsored by WSSO. The visiting departmental staff and officers were led by EE, PHED (Rural) Er. L. Tongpang Longkumer. Stressing on the importance of global handwashing day, sanitation and hygiene consultant PHED (Rural) division, Dimapur, Imojungla Longkumer told the students that, it was important to create awareness and understanding about washing hands with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. She also gave tips to the students on the right way of washing hands for healthy life. The programme was chaired by IEC consultant PHED (Rural) division, Dimapur Vibou Seyie while principal of the host school, Fr. B. Varghese gave the welcome address and vote of thanks was delivered by EE, PHED (Rural) division, Dimapur, Er. L. Tongpang Longkumer. Pledge taking was administered by MGM school teacher, Ratan Chakraborty.
PHEK: PHED Phek division celebrated the global hand washing day on the theme “raise a hand for hygiene” with the students of Royal Foundation School (RFS) at its school premises. The department also held the programme with the ongoing training programme of youth leadership and personality of Nehru Yuva Kendra Phek at SIRD Hall Phek town. EE, PHED Phek, Er. Imtiakum gave a brief highlight on the Swachh Bharat Mission and its objectives and stressed that hand washing day is observed all over the world, so as to motivate and mobilize people to improve their hand washing habits with soap. He also encouraged the students to cultivate good sanitary practices for a healthy living. IEC Consultant PHED Phek, Asonuo highlighted on the importance of hand washing with soap as the best way to fight germs and diseases. She urged the students to start inculcating the habits of hand washing and also to spread the message of its importance to their families, friends and community. Later she also demonstrated the technique of hand washing. Sanitation pledge was also administered by the students of RFS Phek Town.
MOKOKCHUNG: Global Handwashing Day was observed was observed in different parts of Mokokchung district with a sanitation pledge to spread the Swachh Bharat Mission from village to village and area to area. WSSO, PHED Mokokchung Division under Swachh Bharat Mission organized a function at Clark Memorial higher Secondary School, Impur where more than three hundred students and teachers attended the programme. The function was graced by executive secretary, ABAM, Rev. Dr. Mar Atsungchanger as the guest of honour. In his speech, Rev. Dr Mar encouraged the students to take a solemn pledge not to litter anything in public places and commit themselves to make hand washing with soap a habit. He also appealed students to spread the message of the importance of hand washing to others to mark the solemn pledge they made on the occasion. Rev Mar also shared cleanliness habit he had seen experienced abroad with the students. Limasenla Longkumer, consultant, who chaired function demonstrated seven steps of hand washing techniques with the help of students and spoke on the significance of the day. The sanitation pledge was administered by Tsongrosongla Jamir, Consultant.
ABOI: Nationwide sanitation campaign and global hand washing day was organized by PHE department Mon at ADC’s conference hall Aboi with Konyak Union president Manlip as the chief guest. In the programme, keynote address was given by EE PHE Mon, L. Leyang Khiamniungan. A speech on importance of good sanitation practices was delivered by JE Wakching, Er. Zacukho Thingo, demonstration of hand washing was done by IEC consultant Medoseto Kiso and vote of thanks by chemist Watinaro.
PEREN: Under Swachh Bharat Mission Peren Town, Global Handwashing Day was observed on the theme ‘Raise Hand for Hygiene’ at All Saints High Secondary School Auditorium, Peren. The programme was organised by WSSO (PHED) Peren with deputy CMO Peren, Dr. Tiala as chief guest. Speaking at the gathering, Dr. Tiala appreciated the PHED department for organising the campaign for school children. She stated that dirty hands can cause many diseases like cholera, dysentery, influenza, common cold and many more which can affect our health. Dr. Tiala further said that hands are the most important part in our body which can perform various functions, same as it can bring many diseases if we ignore it. Washing hand with soap can kill 99% of germs, she said and urged the student to wash hands with soap before and after meal, after toilet, after caring for sick people, after a sneeze and after playing with pets. Welcome address was delivered by EE PHED Peren, Er. Mayangsashi Amer, special songs was presented by Ipungchule, All Saints Higher Secondary School and Keyipeisile, ‘Raise a Hand for Hygiene’ by Er. Ichirang, SDO PHED, demonstration on handwashing with soap by Vito G.Sumi Health & Sanitation Consultant and vote of thanks was delivered by Er.Vikato Swu. The programme was chaired by Er. I. Rongba Chang.
WOKHA: PHE Wokha organised the Global Handwashing Day through inter-school extempore speech competition at DBHSS youth centre, with principal GHSS Wokha Emilo Patton as guest of honour. Stressing on the theme, “raise a hand for hygiene” Emilo said that children were the wealth of the nation, hence she encouraged that for continual social change and healthy environment “we” need to stay fit and healthy. Altogether seven students from seven schools participated in the competition speaking on various topics like sanitation, clean drinking water, clean environment and awareness in schools. The first prize was bagged by Chanjan Joel SS, second prize by Chonbenthung T Odyuo of CMHS and the third prize by Akash Tiwari of Little Angels School. All the winners were given a certificate each along with cash money. The function was chaired by Er. Kedoluto Punyu and the day’s highlight by executive engineer PHE Wokha, while Invocation prayer was pronounced by P.T Humtsoe. Consultant DWSM Wokha, Nise gave a demonstration on hand washing, vote of thanks was delivered by SDO PHE Sanis Er. Limhathung Odyuo.
