Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya on Friday said in India everyone is equal and everyone has the right to practice their own religion. Addressing the 24th annual parents day at St. Mary’s Montessori Hr Secondary School as the chief guest, Acharya further said “there is no second class citizen in India. We are a democratic nation and a secular country”.
Stressing on the need to preserve indigenous languages, he said this exemplifies the unique diverse culture of India. “Indigenous languages identify a community and every community must be proud to preserve their mother tongue,” he added.
Acharya urged upon the gathering to learn languages of other neighboring countries, saying it would help in building a friendly relationship. In order to keep up with the competitive world, he encouraged the students to focus on education with skills. “Your education, your degree, knowledge is not only for you but it’s for your family, your village, your society, your country, if you get these feelings then the country will progress,” he said.
Though knowledge is important, Acharya at the same time said it was important to imbibe the cultural values. He further reiterated saying “education is a social responsibility; it is a social duty and not a business to earn money”.
The Governor lauded Nagaland Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio’s decision to adopt a village in Tuensang under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). “Being an Angami himself, his adoption reflects unity and equal feeling among all countrymen,” he said.
