Emphasizing the need to preserve the traditional values and culture amongst the youngsters, Sumi community of Valley View Colony Dimapur conducted competitions on various indigenous games during the ‘Ahuna’ celebration at the premises of Government Primary School, Saturday.
The competitions drew large number of participation by women folk. Both young and old in traditional attires took part in celebration that was organized by Valley View Colony Council.
Senior member of the Colony, Doyal Swu graced the festival as “Ahuna father”. He stressed on the proper usage of language and also highlighted the significant of Ahuna.
Most significant of the occasion was demonstration of rituals practiced by their forefathers by the colony elders.
They demonstrated how the forefathers carried out rituals while clearing jungle for agricultural activities and offering of meat and locally brewed wine as appeasement to the spirits for bountiful harvest. Rice cooked in bamboo poles were served to the gathering.
Apart from feast, cultural items were also presented by both male and female.
Earlier, the celebration began with an invocation prayer by pastor VVBC, Nukhui Achumi.
DEF Zbto observe Ahuna cum renovation
To mark the Sumi Ahuna primal festival, the DEF Zunheboto led by addl SP Relo T Aye (NPS) and SDPO Yevukhu (NPS) took up the benevolent task in renovating and cleaning the SPs Office, Zunheboto Town traffic points and Police Station etc, here Saturday.
The day culminated with a “Grand Ahuna Feast” in Police Station, Women Cell.
