
Considering the ever-increasing demand of pork in the state and in order to meet the demand, commissioner & secretary for Veterinary & A.H., M.K. Mero on Monday urged the officers of veterinary and animal husbandry to learn the methods of Artificial Insemination (AI) so that productivity could be enhanced to cope up the demand.
Mero said this at an awareness programme on AI in pigs at Hotel Acacia organized by Veterinary and AH.
He said state has been spending crores of rupees in importing pork from outside the state to meet its domestic demand.
However, to attain self-sufficiency in pork production, the commissioner encouraged the officials to dedicate their time and energy and take forward in introducing AI to the pig farmers.
He also informed that activities related to the department would be increased in the coming days.
While delivering “social impact & benefits of AI” in pigs, Dr Auto V, said pig production system is still in a small-scale and unorganized rural activity as part of diversified agriculture. He added that majority dependent on rearing of low performing indigenous pigs.
Dr. Auto said that AI technique would bring immense opportunities in overcoming the deficiency of breeding boar and would help in promotion of establishing small holder breeding unit for meeting the demand of quality pig germplasm. AI technique could be beneficial for meeting the demand of improved pig germplasm at farmers’ door step and might help in faster propagation of elite germplasm, said Dr Auto.
He said establishment of AI unit in the state was the earnest need for meeting the demand of quality pig germplasm.
Overview of AI in pig was also spoken by Dr.Yhuntilo Kent, while welcome and keynote address was given by joint director, Dr.K.David Sema.
The programme was chaired by director, department of veterinary & A.H, Dr.R.T. Ezung.
Technical demonstration of AI equipments was performed by Dr. Yhuntilo Kent & Dr. Auto V.
The second session was chaired by joint director, Dr.S. A Walling with a video display on AI in pig and technical discussion, while vote of thanks was pronounced by additional director, Dr.I.P.Khala.
