While extending full support to Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) initiative for a clean electoral roll, ACAUT Nagaland has brought out certain facts and related processes that needed serious attention.
In a press note, ACAUT media cell maintained that bogus and multiple entries of names in the E-roll was the root of corruption and therefore, should be discouraged. ACAUT alleged that the figures of 2011 census was well as the number of voters in E-roll were incorrect. It claimed that instead, population of Nagaland as per census cannot be more that 12 lakh and the number of voters not more than 7 lakh.
ACAUT reminded CEO that Representation of People’s Act be applied so that any individual having more than two entries in E-Roll should be prosecuted and jailed. It wanted the EC to reach out to , village councils and chieftains/GBs as they were the true repository of power at the village level. ACAUT suggested that unemployed youths should be drawn from all over the State and be empanelled to assist the Block Level Officers (BLOs) in identification of bogus/multiple entries and “ghost households”. ACAUT also demanded that names of illegal immigrants should be struck out immediately and Aadhar card should be compulsorily linked to E-Roll and that ECI should move Supreme Court to make an exception for Nagaland as the state has “unenviable inflated E-Roll position”. ACAUT also urged ECI to adopt Nagaland as a pilot project State for implementation of clean E-Roll agenda. ACAUT urged ECI to consider introducing biometric EVMs in the next assembly elections. to begin with, it asked election department to issue notices to all the government servants in Nagaland Civil Secretariat, to immediately delete their multiple entries.
