The Music Department of Patkai Christian College is all set for the ‘Annual Spring Concert’ to be held on April 17, 3 p.m. at the Bundrock Memorial Auditorium, Patkai campus.
The celebrated work of French composer Theodore Dubois “The Seven Last Words of Christ” will be performed by the Patkai Chorale with soloists Nise Meruno on Baritone, Welly Baruah on Tenor and Vini Chishi on Soprano accompanied by Margaret Shishak on Organ, Zingrin Shishak on Keyboards and Rebekah Moore on Piano with James Swu as the choir conductor.
‘Les sept paroles du Christ’ more popularly known as The Seven Last Words of Christ, is one of the most famous works of François-Clément Théodore Dubois (24 August 1837 – 11 June 1924), a French composer, organist and music teacher.
Words on the Spring concert:
Margaret Shishak-Organist: When I was a young girl, I attended a performance of the Seven Last Words of Christ by Dubois in a Baptist Church in the USA. This experience influenced my desire to pursue a career in the field of, and a love for, classical church music.
Nise Meruno-Baritone: There are so many music schools and I really hope they would encourage the teachers and students to attend such concerts. The sad reality is that most of them just don’t attend and I definitely feel that only classroom teaching is not enough. It’s not just playing or correcting the black notes on a white page. There is so much more to music and the benefits one gets by playing, imparting or listening to it.
Music is a practical and performing art and to witness concerts would only help to inspire, motivate and even learn from the things that may not have happened well. Hope the effort will be taken and the turn out will be great not because we want a full house only but it would mean how passionate people truly are about music.
James Swu-Conductor: The Seven Last Words of Christ, especially those set to music by various composers over the ages, have always held a special place in my heart because it allows me to meditate and introspect prayerfully upon the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross. I do hope that the listening audience will immerse themselves similarly in the music and have a significant spiritual experience.
The concert with its line-up of renowned musicians is surely set to be a great treat for the music lovers especially the ardent followers of classical music.
With no other strategic location better than Patkai Christian College, the hotspot for classical music, fans of the genre can be rest assured to have a spine chilling and breath taking afternoon of pure classical music themed perfectly as ‘The Spring Concert’.
