
Training cum demonstration on “management & control of diseases in pigs” and demonstration on “castration of piglets” was conducted by ATMA Dimapur Kuhuboto block at Khughovi village on May 10 with supervisor, veterinary department, Temsu Jamir as resource person.
In the programme, Jamir highlighted the importance of pig farming where rearing of pigs was a suitable option for small and landless farmers, farm women etc.
He also illustrated that with the growing demand by the consumers, the local production was unable to meet the huge domestic demand in livestock sector and so there was heavy importation of livestock and its products into the state from elsewhere.
Jamir also further elaborated on the management and merits of pig farming, where it was the most accommodative of farm animals and also emphasised on the health management for the control of diseases in pigs.
The programme concluded by a live demonstration of castration of piglets. Earlier the programme was chaired by ATM (ATMA), Kuhuboto block, Yimobendang.
NAHARBARI/SEITHEKEMA: ATMA, Dimapur, Medziphema block and Chumukedima block conducted demonstrations and capacity building on May 11 at Naharbari and Seithekema.
Resource person BTM, Dr. Aseno and AHO and BTT member, Debbie gave a demonstration on how agriculture products like tomatoes, bananas, mangoes and chilli, egg could be processed into value added products like banana cake, tomato sauce and puree, mango pickle, chilli pickle etc.
Dr. Aseno said that often this locally available farm produce were left to rot during bulk production and harvest season leading to economic loss.
She also spoke on de-worming and its importance in human and animals and stressed on the symptoms of worms infestation which includes diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach ache, poor health, anaemia, coughing and epilepsy in some cases.
Therefore proper sanitation of hands and proper washing of vegetables and cooking of meat and regular de-worming of both human and animals was necessary, added Dr. Aseno.
Earlier the programme was chaired by HO and BTT convener, Temsu Longkumar and vote of thanks was delivered by ATM, Zevosenuo Rutsa.
NIULAND TOWN: ATMA Niuland block organized demonstration programme on May 11 at Niuland town with resource person Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM), Dimapur team member, Nitoshe Kinimi.
During the programme, the resource person deliberated on the topic of “Bee-keeping and honey production techniques”.
He said that beekeeping has various advantages like it requires no landownership, low investment, less time consuming, produces honey and by-products, provides medicines and maintains biodiversity.
Since 80% of the area was covered with vegetation and agriculture being the backbone of Nagaland, he encouraged all the farmers and SHGs to take up beekeeping as it increases crop production by acting as pollinating agent.
Later, NBHM project assistant, Francis Kikon, demonstrated on “Handling of scientific Beekeeping tools and equipments” and showed equipments like boxes, extractor, bee veil, etc and how to locate and use it in various farms.
YEVETO VILLAGE: Training and demonstration programme was held at Yeveto village with resource person from department of agriculture, AFA Longshithung Odyuo.
During the programme, Odyuo spoke on the topic “rubber plantation management techniques”. Interested farmers who were new to rubber farming were imparted knowledge on proper selection of site, nursery raising and proper selection of polythene, land preparation, planting, managing, tapping and processing.
He said that RRIM 600 variety is mostly suitable in Dimapur areas in terms of temperature, humidity and rainfall and that pits should be dug and filled with organic matter and rock phosphate and planted in the middle providing mulch and shade.
Odyuo also informed that intercropping could be done in rubber plantations with turmeric, ginger, vegetables, etc which generates good revenue.
Later, SMS (Soil Sc), KVK ICAR, Jharnapani James Kikon, illustrated on the topic of “Soil Health Management in Context to climate change”.
He said that most of the soils in the north eastern region are highly degenerated due to shifting cultivation and heavy nutrient removal by thatch grass. Kikon said soil chemical imbalances could be addressed through application of chemical amendments such as lime and fertilizer.
Kikon highlighted the main constraints in promoting balanced use of fertilizers as inadequate and ill equipped soil testing facilities, neglect of organic manures, inadequate extension system, wide gap in dissemination of knowledge between research institutions, soil testing laboratories and the extension machinery and lack of awareness among farmers about benefits of balanced fertilization.
BADE VILLAGE: Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Dimapur, Dhansiripar block has conducted demonstrations programme on May 13, at Bade Village on “Value addition on horticultural crops”, “Plant protection on maize” and “Capacity building on NeGPA” with BTM, Medziphema block, Dr. Aseno Sakhrie, ATM, Meciesunu Sakhrie, and AFA, Agriculture Deptt., Dimapur Bendangmenla, as resource person respectively.
Major diseases and pest attacking maize crop and their management was demonstrated by Meciesunu. Information on how to register to Kisan Call Centre and the importance of NeGPA/e-governance were explained in detail to the farmers by Bendangmenla.
Dr. Aseno demonstrated the step by step procedure on how to make value added products of horticultural crops (tomato sauce, mango pickle, jackfruit pickle, mango squash and jam).
The programme was attended by participants from Bade and Urra village.
Meanwhile, demonstration on “Fallow land management” was conducted at Selouphe village on May 13, with AO & BTT convener, Dhansiripar block with Ronchamo Kikon, AO as resource person. The importance and benefits of management of fallow land after harvesting of crops were demonstrated.
