First state level Wiz National Spell Bee competition Nagaland was held Saturday, at Delhi Public School,Dimapur with editor in chief of Nagaland post, Geoffrey Yaden, as guest of honour.
Exhorting the students from four districts, Geoffrey Yaden stressed on the importance of competition which plays a vital role in personality development of the student. He said in spelling bee the focus on groups competing together against each other help build a sense of camaraderie which also promotes a broader sense of oneness.
Focussing on the importance of spelling, he said it forms a vital aspect of communication and with grammar and phonetics, they greatly enhance quality of education.
He said when students take part in competitions, they are motivated to win and that spirit was essential for building confidence in one’s abilities. In competitions a few win but winning was not the main goal of competitions he said.
Yaden said most students in Nagaland exhibit lack of confidence, especially when they are outside and opined it was due to poor esteem. He said the low confidence level was due to lack of a positive competitive spirit, which was a very important medium of education beyond the curriculum. Students who have self belief in their proven abilities exude confidence which also help improve their performance, he said.
Yaden also expressed his view that education today is focussed to the outside and thus, contemporary institutions adopt learning beyond classrooms. He encouraged institutions to organise competitions and keep students involved and occupied so that they do not get attracted to other unwanted pastimes.
Concluding his exhortation, Yaden reminded students that their parents fervently hope that they will be achievers. Towards this, he encouraged them to “always give their best shot” and never to allow disappointments spoil their dreams.
Wiz Spell Bee Nagaland, coordinator Meyirenla Yaden, highlighted the main objectives of the competition which aimed at enhancing the spelling and literacy skills of the children by encouraging them to explore English language, expand their vocabulary and to improve their communication, comprehension and pronunciation skills.
