United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas (UNTABA) has raised the inter-state boundary issue between Assam and Nagaland with the chief minister when they met him at his office chamber on May 4 at Kohima.
In a statement, UNTABA joint secretary Ruchuyhun Keppen said that the team after a fruitful discussion with the chief minister submitted a memorandum reiterating its demand to bring amicable settlement on the age old Naga traditional and historical boundary issue with Assam at the time of political settlement.
UNTABA also demanded that the interim agreement of 1972, 1979 and other MoUs between the Government of Nagaland, Assam and Government of India should be reviewed immediately as the agreements were “made under duress against the very history of the Naga people and it has become a stumbling block for development, peace and tranquility in the border areas, and that, these interim arrangements are going to hamper even the current political negotiation at Delhi”.
It demanded revocation of Disputed Area Belt (DAB) in the Naga areas saying that it was against the basic principle of dignity of citizen in their own land. UNTABA stand was that the historical and traditional Naga lands of the entire border belt between Nagaland and Assam from Peren to Mon district had no dispute with Assam whatsoever or with any tribes and nationalities.
Further, UNTABA urged the State government to deploy NAP in the border areas immediately and to open/establish polling stations in all the villages in the border areas at the earliest possible time.
The team also acknowledged the chief minister for according topmost priority on the inter-State boundary issue between Nagaland and Assam.
