A one-day, “National Symposium on Human Rights; Emerging Paradigms”, was jointly organised by the departments of Sociology & Geography, Nagaland University, Lumami, Tuesday, at the Ihoshe Kinimi Hall with imminent social activist Niketu Iralu and human rights activist, educator and managing director, Akum Longchari as resource persons.
While delivering the key note address, former pro-VC, NU, Prof. A Lanu Ao challenged each and every individual to be a human right activist for a just society, as human beings.
Asserting on the sufferings that the North Eastern people of India, past and prior to the independence of India, Prof. Lanu said “we have suffered enough”, and so must be prepared with the basic knowledge of our human rights for the future, so as to “remember, protect and preserve our identify”, he added. Prof. A Lanu Ao shared 3 important features that must be observed at the emerging paradigm shift in the land: Human rights should be free from governmental violations in the name of law and provisions; People should enjoy human rights and the basic amenities of life in all equality: And that there should be even aspects of civil, political and economic rights.
A. Lanu urged the academicians, intellectuals and responsible institutions to play an important role in disseminating the principles of human rights to the interiors of the people. At the same time, the professor reminded that while in pursuit of human rights, one should not forget about the rightful co-existence of all living beings and nature. He said man cannot exist alone without an even environment.
The book, titled ‘Human Rights in Nagaland : Emerging Paradigms’, co-authored by Dr. Lanusashi Longkumer & Dr. Toshimenla Jamir was released by vice-chancellor, Nagaland University, N S Jamir and a special folk motif choral song was presented by the students of IV semester, department of Sociology. Welcome address was said by Dr. Toshimenla Jamir and foot note of the book was highlighted by Dr. Lanusashi Longkumer. The compere of the inaugural programme was Pitheli Jimo and the vote of thanks was moved by Hod, Geography, Prof. M S Rawat.
