Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) organized a legal awareness programme with Sikh community at Gurudwara, D’Block, Kohima on May 10.
Speaking on rights of the consumer, panel lawyer, KDLSA Sunjib Rana informed on how consumers could file compliant and claim compensation under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Explaining the hierarchy of the consumer courts, he also appraised that a consumer could approach the consumer court and seek quick redress free of cost from a consumer court (forum) situated in each district.
Speaking on human trafficking, panel lawyer, KDLSA Zheviholi Swu emphasized on the Immoral Prevention Act, 1956. She lamented that human trafficking was a trend in Nagaland, which was common particularly among women and children for domestic worker, prostitution, marriage, organ removal, child labour etc.
Zheviholi Swu informed that through the Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012, victim of human trafficking could avail compensation for loss or injury. She said that the scheme could be availed by submitting an application to the District Legal Service Authority.
Speaking on rights of an arrested person, panel lawyer, KDLSA Nenli Kez highlighted about the rights available if a person was arrested. She further appraised on speedy trail, remedies of bail available for the accused under section 167 CrPC, how arrest were made for women and children, Juvenile Justice Act, 2000 etc.
Sikh Community, Kohima president Lakhwinder Singh in his welcome speech lauded KDLSA for organizing the legal awareness. He said that it was the first time such legal awareness programme was conducted with the Sikh community in Kohima.
An interaction session was also held. Eminent Sikh leaders settled in Kohima and KDLSA lawyers participated in the awareness programme.
The programme was chaired by panel lawyer KDLSA Temsu Walling and panel lawyer KDLSA Keduvi Zhotso, pronounced the vote of thanks.
