A gunfight broke between the Indian Army para commandos and militants in Nagaland’s Mon district bordering Myanmar in the early hours of Wednesday, a police official here said.
The exchange of fire took place in Choknyu village near Tapi bridge, when suspected militants fired at the para commandos.
“The gunfight lasted for an hour and suspected NSCN-K and ULFA-I militants retreated back to the jungles after intensive firing from the para commandos,” a Nagaland police official told IANS.
Intelligence officials said that the militants had sneaked into Nagaland from Myanmar to create terror.
Mon Correspondent adds: There were conflicting reports about the incident. As per Mon police report, the firing incident took place in Choknyu village when one person, identified as Avihoto was on a hunting trip.
Police said Avihoto, reportedly a worker at the ongoing bridge construction over Tapi River, had crossed over Tapi river towards Choknyu area for hunting with a 12 bore gun.
On seeing a wild cat, he took his shot at the animal at around 8.30 p.m. However, police said he suddenly heard shots being fired from Choknyu side. He was not aware that the AR patrolling party was in that area, police said. In this regard, the Assam Rifles personnel detained Avihoto for accidental firing on the patrolling party.
Meanwhile, Konyak Union has expressed dismay for violation of its resolution. In this regard, KU has directed its Mon Unit to take appropriate action against Avihoto for violating the hunting restriction imposed by the KU, which is from March 1 to October 31.
Further, KU has appealed to all to maintain peace within its jurisdiction.
