Expressing dismay at the tragic incident of bridge collapse at 4th Mile Dimapur on July 11 and condemning the “lackadaisical attitude” of the government, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) on Friday demanded that the PWD (R&B) minister step down immediately owing moral responsibility.
In a press release, NCD president, T Bangerloba, and general secretary, Thsapongkyu Sangtam, also sought suspension of PWD (R&B) divisional executive engineer for utter negligence.
NCD asserted that the bridge collapse was a preventable tragedy had the government took cognizance of the unstable bridge.
The council pointed out that the bridge served as the lifeline of Niuland sub-division, but now that the bridge was gone, there was no alternative mode available for the public as well as the students.
Maintaining that maintenance and safety inspections were not performed rigorously, the NCD said the responsible department failed to act despite warning about the bridge’s dangerous condition since past many years.
Further, NCD sought to know where has crores of money sanctioned meant for the bridge construction gone. It also questioned what has the government and responsible department been going all those years when they were fully aware of the condition of the bridge.
