
Nagaland legal service authority has been urged to create more awareness on basic rights of the people and make people aware on how to benefit from it.
Addressing the inaugural function of a three-day “induction training of panel lawyers on lawyering skills” on Thursday organised by State Legal Service Authority at SIRD conference hall, Thursday, Judge, Gauhati High Court, Songkhupchung Serto, said though a person may be empowered with all the rights if one does not know their own rights then it would be useless.
In the past, Justice Songkhupchung said lawyers were perceived as “greatest sinners” but added that over the years the image has changed.
Pointing out the poor infrastructural development in the state, especially the road, Justice Songkhupchung said people need to know their rights so that the person in-charge would be duty-bound to perform.
Citing instances of English people who defended their country during Nazi invasion, he urged the lawyers to develop that kind of spirit and attitude, saying “the sense of fulfillment you get is greater than money you get in helping the helpless.”
In a keynote address, Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO), president, Kezhokhoto Savi, shared his experiences as a legal practitioner and stressed on the importance of ethics: how to deal with clients and professional ethics: how to conduct and the manner a lawyer presents the case and etiquettes as lawyers.
Nagaland State Legal Service Authority (NSLSA), member secretary Nino Iralu delivered the vote of thanks. Coordinator, NSLSA, Akumla Longchari and CJM & secretary Kiphire DLSA, Mezivolu T. Therieh were the resource persons for the second session. Legal practitioners from across the state are taking part in the three days training.
